People often tell me that they feel drawn to explore spirit work, but they have no idea where to start. Go with your gut! If you feel drawn to a particular modality, look into it. There is no one right answer. When I first started really exploring the spirit world, I took every class, joined every meditation, attended every fair and read every book that interested me. I even went to a spiritualist church once or twice. I had no idea where the path of spirituality would take me, but I was having fun.
If you are looking for something concrete, you could try starting with reiki, a healing touch or EFT tapping session or course. Explore metaphysical stores and ask lots of questions. Usually in this line of work, I find people are more than willing to share their expertise. Practitioners do this work because it is their soul work and they truly enjoy it. I have never heard of someone I know saying that they do this healing, spiritual work to get rich quick. Much like being a teacher, nurse or clergyman, you probably will not get rich. We do it to help people.
There used to be many more brick and mortar centers around that I could visit. Now many practitioners work online. Searching online is good as you can quickly narrow down what your interests are and there are many free resources, meditations, and reference materials to be found. The benefit to a local center is that you can find a group to share experiences with and bond with in person. Either way, it’s refreshing to have access to a community of like minded people. You will soon find that your ideas are not actually that strange. There will be a lot of, “OMG! You thought that too?” Many years ago, my journey started in earnest when I stumbled across a healing center in my hometown. They were advertising a table tipping event that night. I had no idea what that meant, but I was in!
Table tipping was especially fascinating. It is a form of physical mediumship. People gently rest the tips of their fingers on the edge of a round pedestal table and receive messages when the table taps them out. The table literally moves. I could not believe this phenomenon. So I obviously did what any sane person would do. I waited until everyone got up halfway through the session to stretch, looked around to be sure no one was watching, and I ran my hands all along the table. Nothing. Not a string anywhere. Hmmm I thought. Someone was probably using their fingertips to push the table hard. I tried to lift the table. It was pretty heavy. Too heavy for someone to manipulate undetected with just their fingertips. Sigh. Maybe it’s real. After a short break everyone came back. I resumed my position, fingers lightly on the edge of the table. Strangely, my name was tapped out! My great-grandmother had arrived with her name, the correct spelling of my name (the name on my nametag was spelled incorrectly and I did not bother to tell the facilitator), and messages. No one at the table tipping session knew me, nonetheless my great-grandmother! I was hooked!
Pure intentions are a must when working with spirit. You only want to work with the highest and best energies. Ask yourself, “Why do I want to do this work?” If the answer is because you feel ready and open or want to help others heal, that’s a good sign. If you are looking for peace, calm or reassurance that we are protected by the angelic realm and our loved ones in spirit, good again. If any of your answers involve fame, money or gaining inside information aka secrets, you will be sorely disappointed. Spirits of the highest and best order will not be interested in working with those associated with greed, self-serving purposes or any other nefarious activities. I am sure you are not that type of person though, because honestly, you would not be interested in this blog if you were and you definitely would not have read this far.
You don’t need to know exactly where you are going with spirit or what will happen. Just go with the flow. If you are in the flow, things come on your path at the just right time. Things feel natural and “easy.” When you continue to run into roadblocks, challenges, extremely difficult people, etc. you are probably no longer on the right path. Maybe a certain direction used to be the right path for you, but things change. It is likely you mastered whatever lessons awaited you there and it is time to move on. Rest assured, you are in good company. Lots of people are feeling drawn to make changes in their lives right now. That includes professions, personal relationships, hobbies, you name it! Your destiny is whatever feels right at this time. Of course, spirit would never tell you to hurt yourself or anyone else! So listen to your gut and explore what makes you feel curious and excited.
It is important that people are mindful of protecting themselves prior to engaging in spirit work. They also need to understand the materials they are using and how to properly handle them. You would not let someone use a table saw alone if they had never had any instruction. That would be dangerous. Items used for spiritual purposes must also be treated like tools, not toys. Many people have probably had or heard about an unsettling experience someone has had with a Ouija board. Ouija boards are not “bad” in and of themselves. They are tools for spirit communication. Tools need to be respected, treated with care and used with positive intentions. Unfortunately Ouija boards were treated as a party game by adolescents for many years (myself included). Without protection in place, those children were basically opening the door for any and every energy to stroll through. You would not go to bed at night, unlock the front door, leave all the lights on and post a sign outside that says, “Come on in and help yourself!” That is basically what people are doing when they try spirit communication without protection in place. Your soul is your inner house. Protect it. I strongly advise only working with materials for spirit communication or healing work if you are with a person who has been properly trained or have been trained by a reputable practitioner yourself. At the very least, the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself is say, “Archangel Michael, protect me now!” That can be done anytime you feel in need of protection, in your head or aloud.
Truth be told, I still don’t know where the path of spirituality will take me in the future. When I feel inspired, I pay attention and act accordingly. Right now, spirit gifts me a different class each month which is perfect for beginners to attend. They give me ideas for blogs and bring the just right people on my path. I feel best when doing spirit work and that is how I know it is right for me. I’ll continue to go with the flow. It’s not for everyone, and I totally respect that. But if you are ready, the journey awaits!
